Next week I’m attending the 2013 International Builders Show in Vegas! IBS is always a blast because I get to network and catch-up with my friends from around the country. Additionally, I am running for Vice Chair of Professional Women in Building. This is an amazing group of women that represent all facets of the industry. It will be a pleasure to work on a national level to represent them!
Finally, I am presenting for the fifth year at the International Builders Show. The first time I presented was in 2009 when I presented “How to Be a Social Media Butterfly.” It is kind of crazy to reflect back, but that was the first social media presentation at IBS. Now five shows later, I’m presenting, “Beyond Facebook: Pinterest, Google+ and More” with two fellow MIRMs. This seminar is geared toward those who have Facebook, Twitter and blogging down and are looking for the newest social media tools. We will discuss the importance of and how to develop content that drives sales; mobile websites; QR codes and the fastest growing social media sites in the industry: Google+, Pinterest, FourSquare, Instagram and Houzz.

This year at the OBIE awards was an award-winning year!! We brought home some bling and we are very proud of it! I was quite surprised and honored to be presented with the Council Chair of the Year award from the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association. Additionally, our team was honored with three OBIE awards for work we did for Rialto Capital. We were honored with a Gold OBIE for Best Associate website for www.GaHomeForeclosures.com, a Gold for a banner ad that ran on AJC Homefinder and a Silver OBIE for our social media campaign.
It is always nice to be honored for successful client work by our industry peers! Many of you may not know that I had the pleasure of serving as the Public Relations Director for Zoo Atlanta from 1994 – 1998. It was by far one of the most fun jobs I have ever had. Not only did I have the pleasure of working with an incredibly talented team of people, but I had the opportunity to get to know some amazing animals. One of those animals became near and dear to me while I was there. Sadly, Ivan the gorilla recently passed away at age 50. He captured the hearts of animal lovers and activists from coast to coast as he moved from a concrete enclosure at the B&I Shopping Mall in Tacoma, Washington to the lush outdoor Ford African Rainforest at Zoo Atlanta. It was one of the most incredible highlights of my career. The day Ivan arrived we had 22 news crews on the ground. It was a mix of media from Seattle and Tacoma, Atlanta and national reporters. His arrival was covered by print, TV and radio, and visitors flocked to see him.
From his first steps into the rainforest, to his introduction to potential mate Molly, Ivan’s wonder and surprise captured the hearts of zoo staff and visitors alike. He taught us how to look at the world with wonder, and that it is good to have a safe place. The research staff and zoo staff that cared for Ivan was incredible. I’m happy to announce that I’ll be starting the year off by giving a seminar, “Facebook for Business: Build Fans and Grow Customers” at the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce. The seminar will be held this coming Friday, January 13 at 11:30 am in the Anheuser-Busch Community Room.
Facebook is such a vital tool for personal and professional life- I don’t know where we’d be without it. Did you know that Facebook has nearly 800 million active users? More than half of them log on daily. Think of the fantastic potential for networking and marketing!
